What are Aikido classes for children like?

Aikido’s techniques begin by getting out of harm’s way, followed by upsetting the other person’s balance so that they fall down or can be immobilised. Aikido emphasises moving yourself to safety, rather than fighting. Aikido's fluid movements of are designed to neutralise force rather than resist it. Aikido encourages a calmer, more considered response to difficult situations. Falling and rolling safely are major skills taught in Aikido. These skills will keep your child safe and help them to be more confident in other activities too.

Children’s Aikido classes encourage cooperation over competition. A lot of the practice is done with a partner, so children learn that resisting each other gets them nowhere. Children take turns at performing and receiving techniques so they truly get both sides of the story. Aikido is about learning to get along with other people while maintaining your own integrity.
